Hospitals use technology to personalize care, however inequalities remain a constant factor in patient care and experiences.
For example, a Black patient arrives at the ER, in excruciating pain. Rather than helping him, the nurse minimizes his chief complaints, believing the patient is seeking drugs for recreational use, a long standing myth that Black people don’t feel pain like others. Black patients often receive less effective pain management than white individuals, research shows. This disparity causes needless discomfort, erodes trust in medical professionals, which worsens the overall well-being of the patient.
Several studies showed physicians are often impartial and their prejudices can exacerbate the level of care. Technology is a tool designed to enhance care, but it doesn’t erase human flaws; instead it needs careful ethical insight, human experiences and careful adjustments to avoid ethical dilemmas and biases.
How do you provide insight and transparency when learning and creating language models for patient care that is fair, safe, ethical without biases?
Learn about different cultures and their beliefs; spot unfair bias, regularly check for disparities, and speak up when dealing with ethical dilemmas, your opinion and experiences are important to creating a safer AI in healthcare.
AI in Healthcare has a long way to go. Everyday, the question is asked: how do we make it safe for all patients without the ethical dilemmas and biases. We must understand and acknowledge that tools are created by algorithms and your training will help create a safer healthcare model that can deliver safe, competent ethical decisions, based on real life patient care experiences, not just a tailored made tool that is flawed.
